Pooler, GA - Homes for Sale and Community Information
Pooler is a city in Chatham County, Georgia. As odd as it sounds, this small but charming country town exists just ten miles north of bustling Savannah. Pooler consists of 28 square miles of land, and about 19,200 people live here.
Pooler is the kind of small town where everyone still knows everyone else, they walk the streets safely at night, and the local ice cream parlor is the place to meet. Residents in Pooler homes work in local industry or the military. They send their kids to two elementary schools, one middle school and into Rincon or Savannah for high school. The Savannah College of Art and Design, Savannah Technical College, Armstrong Atlantic State University and Georgia Southern University are nearby.
Pooler was vitrually a grass field until Robert William Pooler designated it as a station on the Central of Georgia Railway. Pooler is a central locale in Civil War lore, and was the place General Sherman negotiated the Confederate surrender of the port of Savannah. The town was developed after the Civil War by Ben Rothwell, who gave free land to people who would build permanent homes. The sleepy little town got along by logging and brickmaking until the I-95 highway brought travelers through Pooler. An explosion of business and tourism over the years has transformed Pooler into the fast growing Savannah suburb it is today.
