History


As a resource of rich Spanish conquests and a Safe Haven for Pirates, Tybee Island boasts a rich and colorful history. After the development of a lighthouse, an area military fort, and the christening of the area by the Methodist pioneer, John Wesley, the area played a significant roles in several wars within America. Today, residents and visitors may visit historical places such as the Roundhouse Railroad Museum, the Davenport House, and Old Fort Jackson. Historical footnotes: Tybee Island got a higher profile name makeover in the late 1950s -- to "Savannah Beach." It was subsequently abandoned.  The U.S. Air Force accidentally dropped an atomic bomb here in 1958 (it did not detonate).
